Leaving The Hutterite Colony, INTERVIEW

Hello All

Please see the e-mail below from a fine lady from Medicine Hat, AB who recently contacted me about a request she has.

I personally spoke with Gail and she has given me permission to post her request on this Blog.

If you are a Hutterite who lives in the area who has either left the colony or joined please contact Gail.

If you prefer to voice your thoughts here instead, then by all means do so.

BTW: Here is a special SHOUTOUT to Marty. How are things?

Have a wonderful day my friends and STAY SAFE.
Jerry

Hi Jerry - my name is Gail Jansen and I am a writer with the Prairie Post Newspaper, in Southern Alberta, Canada.

It is with great interest that I stumbled upon your blog. I am interested in doing a story on Leaving the Colony (about someone such as yourself that chose to leave the colony), with a possible follow up on "Entering the Colony" (about someone who was not born Hutterite but rather joined later on in life) and wonder if you might
have contact names or information for people in Southern Alberta, who might be willing to share their stories with me.

You may contact at me at this address, or at the following contact information:

  • Perhaps Gail would also be interested in the folks who want to join a Hutterite colony and are unable to find one that would accept them.

  • It is very important that people understand this about the Hutterites:

The Hutterites are a deeply rooted established church, having existed for over 500 yrs through much persecution. We are not here as a joke. Many colonies will accept new comers. However, if one attempts to join in order to change its doctrines, its way of thinking, and create unrest among its people, they will not be welcome. They are advised to find the church that meets their needs.

Thanks for the tip. I am hoping that most people who want to join the colony have a deep understanding of the Hutterite Religion and what they are about to enter into. It is a huge commitment.

I would just like to add this please.... There is NO LEHRERLEUT COLONY in existence that will accept OUTSIDE members. Allowing others to join the colony is a Schmiedeleut doctrine ONLY and I think MAYBE a Dariousleut doctrine as well.. but please let me know if I am correct on the Dariusleut, so that I am not giving false information.

As always, Have a Wonderful Day

  • The unfortunate reality is some who join have this exact agenda. It has thus created a sort of distrustful attitude towards new comers, hence, one reason why there are so few who are willing accept them.

I see, where you are coming from and I certainly can see where the resistance would come into play when folks ask to join.

Hutterites who offer their hearts and souls to those who ask to join are in a tough position when those members decide not to follow the rules, I am sure but just know that one bad egg does not ruin the cartoon, it only ruins the omelette... In other words take that omelette (the new member who does not want to follow the traditions) and politely tell them to find another home...

I am sure there are many cases where someone joined and followed all the rules though... Right?

    Thanks R

  • That's right, Jerry. It's why I said "some who join...."

Anyone with true intentions is welcome, and kudos to those communities who dare to take that chance.
