Hutterites (Everything and Anything about Hutterites)

This is the official Hutterite Blog.

It is being run, edited, updated, by an actual real live Hutterite.

WELL....Except for one thing. I left the colony in April of 1993 but I am still a Hutterite at heart ans always will be. You can never take the Hutterite out of a person.

This is dedicated to everyone who has questions about the Hutterite Lifestyle.

Post away and ask.

I hope all is going well!
Hey, I am not asking this to be ignorant and I guess it is actually quite the opposite but I was just looking through your photos and I see the kids and your brothers wife in the different style of dress. Is this a real culture or religion? I am always fascinated by people and interested in learning about other ways of life, cultures, beliefs, etc...
I hope this doesn't come across weird. Just curious. Hey, after all, I'm a Mormon, we have some different ways of doing things!
Write when you get a chance and hope all is well out in Big Sky Country!

Thanks for asking your question about my pictures.

Yes, that is a totally different culture than what you are probably familiar with.

The best way to explain it would be this website right here. http://www.hutterites.org This was put together by a Hutterite Colony School.

I am an ex-hutterite and am currently developing a website which will explain my culture and where I grew up. I plan to really go in dept with my site more so than the website mentioned above.

I really do appreciate your question as there are thousands of people who are so curious about the hutterite lifestyle. You should see the looks these people get when they are out in public. lol

I am not a practicing Hutterite as I left home (or ran away from home at the age of 18). I am what they call a outcast I guess. I still love my family and visit on a regular basis. I think my love for my family can be seen by the pictures I have posted about them.

I will let you know when my web-project is LIVE and you can learn all about it from there. In the meantime what prompted you to add me to your friends list. I am an online marketer and I am always interested in what makes people decide what they decide.

Thanks Buddy and PLEASE do not feel awkward about asking a GREAT question.

  • Hey Jerry,
    Thanks for the message!
I looked at the website. Very interesting! I have always been fascinated by the Amish and it looks like the Hutterites are similar. It must take some unreal faith to be a part of such a sect or community in this day and age. Society has gotten so far away from engulfing yourself in religion or faith that it seems the people who choose to do so are extremely strong.
It would be a huge challenge for me to live this way as when I work and make money, I want it to be mine! Am I selfish?
Many years ago when a part of Southern Utah was being settled, the Mormons came up with a similar way of doing things. they called it The United Order and it basically achieved the same goals. Everyone helped one another out and "what was mine was also my neighbors". This was intact for several years. I think they quit following it in the late 1800s or early 1900s as soon as the people were settled . In fact, my mothers family comes from a town that is called Orderville, named for the United Order many of my ancestors were heavily involved in bringing to pass the United Order.

Anyway, keep me up to date on your web page! I'll be anxious to read it.

You asked why I wanted to add you as a friend? Well a couple reasons. First, I was doing a search for people in the Plains Region. I was a missionary in South Dakota, Wyoming, and Nebraska for my church from 1989 - 1991. I love that country out there and would love to have some friends out there as it has been so long, I have lost contact with most of the folks out there. I saw your picture with you and the calf (I have been involved in livestock for my entire life) and you look like a nice fellow and really enjoyed your profile. I guess that is about it.

Well, keep in touch and have a great day!

  • Hey Jerry,
I hope you are doing well.
Hey I was watching Dr. Phil last night and there was a Hutterite fellow on there from Minnesota. Supposedly he knows where a guy is who joined his colony there but kidnapped his two daughters before doing it and the mother was having Dr. Phil see if he could help find them. The man that was on the show was pretty tight lipped and mentioned he had told the man that if Gods way and the law aren't the same then you should break the law and go with God.
Is that common for the Hutterites? I know I have met some law enforcement officers who were total idiots and weren't necessarily following the law when they were at work but I feel everyone should abide by the laws of the land. What are your thoughts?

    Thanks,
    Tyler

By Tyler, At 2:06 PM, May 04, 2006

  • Hello

I am very surprised about that Dr. Phil story. No ..Hutterites do not generally do that. There are three types of Hutterites and they all differ in certain areas. My culture of Hutterites does not accept outsiders into the colony. Not to live anyway. They accept visitors and tours but they do not accept members that are not born-hutterites. The Hutterites featured on Dr. Phil obviously do accept outsiders and if they are helping the kids then they are doing it because they fear for their safety. Hutterites are very family oriented and I have a feeling that the father came to them. I think he took advantage of their naive ways.

I see they are going to have a follow up on May 10. I will be sure to record it. Thanks for giving me a heads up about the story. I am very surprised that this guy went on national TV like that.

And yes Hutterites do abide by the law of the land but because they always take care of their own problems and very rarely go to the law if there are internal problems, I think, they tend to take for granted the law of the land sometimes..

I wish I could have seen the whole story. I could have better answers for you there.

    Thanks Tyler
    Jerry

  • Dear Jerry
I WAS JUST WONDING TO TELL YOU THAT I DRESS MUCH LIKE YOUR FAMILY AND OTHER HUTTERITES BECAUSE I HAVE CHOSEN AT A YOUNG AGE TO SEPARATE MYSELF FROM THE WORLD.
I AM A SABBATH KEEPER ( I KEEP MY SABBATH ON SATURDAY) I DRESS IN SIMPLE CLOTHS AND A HEAD DRESS.
SOME OF THE LADIES IN THE GREAT FALLS, FAIR HAVEN, AND CASCADE HUTTERITE COLONIES HAVE HELPED ME DESIGN AND SOME HAVE SHARED THEIR IDEAS ABOUT POSSIBLE SELLING SOME OF THE DRESSES THAT I MAKE ONLINE AND TO OTHER PEOPLE. ITS NOT EASY TO BE DIFFERENT FROM MY FAMILY AND OTHERS. BUT I AM. I HAVE A LIVE OF MY OWN OUT SIDE OF MY FAMILY BECAUSE I DRESS DIFFERENT AND I LIKE GOING TO MONTANA HUTTERITE COLONIES AND TALKING WITH THE YOUNGER WOMEN.
ANY WAS, I AM BLABING ABOUT NOTHING. SO I WILL LET YOU GO.

  • Thanks for sharing your story. I admire your courage as I KNOW it is very difficult to dress a certain way and not be made fun of or even shunned. Always remember..ONLY YOU...Know who you are and no one has the right to tell YOU to dress or do certain things.. Even though our stories are in a way opposites.. I CHOOSE TO DRESS LIKE YOU WERE TAUGHT TO DRESS and YOU ARE CHOOSING TO DRESS THE WAY I WAS TAUGHT TO DRESS... It still has the same end result. WE are exercising our rights and that is FREEDOM.. Peace and Love from Billings Montana and Please say Hello to the Colonies you visit from ME. Tell them I am Rev. Paul's son from Martinsdale. They will know me. Blessings

  • I am from the Martinsdale Hutterite Colony in the Harlowton, Montana area. I was born and raised there and left in early spring of 1993.
What kind of home-business are you running if you do not mind my asking, I do some home business stuff myself and it is always good to network with like minds. Also how do you know the Hutterites at Cascade Colony?.. I think I may have a few distant Relatives at that colony. Peace and Happy New Year Kali

By Jerry Wipf, At 11:36 AM, January 02, 2007

  • Dear Jerry
that's sounds lovely i have never been to that colony before, guess i should try that one this fall or next spring. I run a quilt, afghan, gift basket, house hold ideams, and simple cloths for woman and men and i also have my own style of head dress and dress that i sell. but i also sell some of the hutterite dresses.. i am trying to get a website for it. but for now i just make ordering sheets and set them in a small coffee or dentist place and pick them up the next time i go in or have one of the employees send them to me. I also started selling my ideams at the farmer's markets.
I know the cascade colony, because i worked at the hospital here in Great falls this last summer and there where some of the young ladies there...I just started going to the colonies this last year so i am still fresh in their mind i think. Plus i go by my self and that i think upsets them because i am only 15 well 16 on march 15th. And i do not let anyone in my family go with me because my sisters are very out spoken and i was too but i learned not to say any thing and listen to people. And my sisters have change rolls with me if you might say. They use to be reserved and not so loud and i use to me very out spoken. But i change that this last year. I took care of a lady my the name of Linda Wurg and visited with her niece Lisa Wipf. that is why i thought you might be related to them. I also to care of a lady my the name of ANNA, oh I just forgot her last name but any ways the two ladies Linda and Lisa are from the cascade colony and ANNA is form the Fair Haven Colony.
Anyways, write back when you can.
Thanks for talking to me. its Fun!
    sincerely Kali

  • Hi Jerry,
I just found your blog &
find it amusing that a ex-Hoooooooterite would dedicate all his spare time in creating and maintaining a website about Hutterites. Not to mention the blog and uTube video's you already put out. So your reason for leaving was...?

What bothers me is the way you...an EX (keyword: ex) Hutterite go about throwing such phrases as "my blog is the offical Hutterite website" around. Before daring to throw that little bit of information around, please thread cautiously. Think carefully of the 2000+ people you are about to portray: I've googled "hutterites" many times, and came up with sorts of trash. Whatever u do, please don't allow your website to be biased on one of the 3 groups of hutterites, or to degrade anything or anyone as most of these sites did.

By far, the most unbiased, informative and educated site was www.hutterites.org. Very professionally made. I heard that with the elders blessing, it is the official hutterite website.
Which brings up my final question: instead of just attempting to set up your own little website, Why don't u join up with the the crew behind the hutterites.org website?

I was on there recently and saw this whole new category under hutteritehistory. Very impressive. It shows that the '.org' website is continuesly under production.

    take care,
    Jane Smith

  • Thanks for your comment.

It does not matter to me what anyone thinks about my blog, my videos, my website, I am not out to win a contest. I am out to share my knowledge with those looking for it.

I am not portraying anyone in a negative light and will never betray my culture. I am proud of how I was raised otherwise I would not write about it..The Hutterites are my family and they always will be.

As far as me calling this the official Hutterite Blog.. It is about the interaction, the experience of being able to ask a person who grew up as a Hutterite questions about his culture. Anyone can appreciate that. Anyway I used to think so. It is viewers' questions and readers insight that will make this official.

I am here to help people better understand my unique culture.

I am simply expressing myself with this blog..it is my god-given right..I live in a free country. I am not hurting anyone, I am simply trying to educate others about Hutterites.

Every time someone hears that I am a Hutterite, I spend 15 minutes explaining just what a Hutterite is.. so I decided to build a site from my point of view and that is exactly what I did.

The Hutterites from Canada who set up Hutterites.org did an excellent job and I appreciate their site. I send people over there all the time. It is very informative.

I am not "dedicating all my spare time in creating and maintaining a website about Hutterites" as you put it.. It takes about 1 hour a week to work on this little project. Hardly a full time, spare time, deal.. lol

I am helping educate others and you can take it however you want.. my friend.

As far as these other sites out there that you say you found.. excluding Huttererites.org they are merely people who hate and discriminate against Hutterites. It's tough to be different in today's world and no Hutterites are not perfect. But show me a culture that is and I will send you one million dollars.

I know I will get a lot of heat from people over this project. You basically just proved that.

NO ONE HAS THE RIGHT TO DENY ME MY VOICE. I AM A HUTTERITE THAT CHOSE TO LEAVE and Even though I call myself an Ex-Hutterite anyone with half a brain in their head knows that I am not denying my culture. I do not practice the Religion and that is what makes me an Ex-Hutterite. It's kinda like someone who does not practice their marriage any longer they become an ex-spouse. Get It. Pretty Simple Logic.

    Peace "Jane Smith"

    Jerry Wipf

PS: Thanks for the comment. I will take it and make it an actual post with my response so more people can read it.

  • The Apostle's Creed

    The Apostle's Creed

Hutterites accept all 12 points of the Apostle’s Creed as Truth. All members publicly declare their belief in it upon baptism.

    The Apostle's Creed

    1. I believe in God the Father Almighty, Maker of Heaven and earth.
    2. and in Jesus Christ, His only Son, our Lord
    3. who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the virgin Mary,
    4. suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried: He descended into Hell:
    5. the third day He rose again from the dead.
    6. He ascended into Heaven,
    7. and sits at the right hand of God the Father Almighty.
    8. From thence He shall come to judge the living and the dead.
    9. I believe in the Holy Spirit,
    10. ONE holy Christian Church, the fellowship of saints,
    11. the forgiveness of sins,
    12. the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting.

  • OK

I will accept that answer although I would like you to tell me who you really are some day..

Yes, I know it will take time.. But I am confident that you will..

My friend..Let me remind you that you are a human being with feelings and you have every right to believe what it is you want to believe.. My point is.. God Loves All People INCLUDING Those Who Leave The Hutterite Colony..

Now, I know you are still a member and that is fine but...It does not mean that you should not have your own thoughts.. After all I think the last time you checked the mirror there was YOU staring back at you.. Right?

There is a reason that you are following my Blog and I have a feeling that you are an individual who believes strongly in self and at the same time have a strong connection with your culture.

We are one and the same.
But...Don't let others tell you HOW, WHERE, WHEN, WHY, and WHAT to think. Use the personality GOD gave you and be the individual that you know you SHOULD be..

    Peace

  • people need to control their thoughts and direct them towards righteousness!

sure, your thoughts are yours, free. but thoughts become words and actions.

words and actions are what you are judged by, here AND in eternity.

or don't you believe in eternity?

  • Hi Jerry

I know you stated that we could ask you anything - well here it goes.

I live in North Dakota and have had the opportunity to meet a number of Hutterites from the Aberdeen SD and Hawley MN area.

Over the last 6-10 years I have heard, what I have always thought of as an "urban legand", that the Hutterites would bring men into the colony for the sole purpose to inpregnant their women. I have heard that it is tough to control "inbreeding" within the colony. At one point I heard that the Hutterites would look for drunk, blond haired, blue-eyed college boys in Aberdeen SD... and then bring them to the colony...

Anyway, I know it was a silly question, but had to ask. Have you ever heard this?
